Zelma lived in Lamar from the time of her birth until her graduation, when she would leave to attend Adams State College in Colorado, and later Michigan State College in Michigan where she received her Masters.
Zelma married Larry Summers on Christmas Day in 1959, and the newlyweds travelled the world, teaching young adults in Liberia, Africa, Guam, and all over the United States. She remained in Guam for some time before returning to Colorado to be closer to family in 2021.
Zelma was involved with the Methodist Church and Habitat for Humanity. She loved animals, particularly cats and dogs, and she enjoyed reading, quilting, and travelling. She was the owner and manager of a book store called Hafa Books, and she will be missed by former students at Ordot-Chalan Pago Elementaries where she was a librarian.
